- The nutrients consumed that support body functions and stores for times of increased need.

Examples:

- Whole milk and 3%-fat yogurt were judged to be about as desirable

Undesirable Nutrition:

- An undesirable combination of ingested nutrients, such that the amount of one nutrient ingested interferes with or alters absorption and/or utilization of another nutrient.

Examples:

- consumption of 8 oz of filet mignon

NQI values >1.0 may be desirable or not, depending on the nutrient in question. For example, NQI values >1.0 may be viewed as desirable for calcium or iron but as undesirable for saturated fat, cholesterol, or sodium.
