Lesson 1: Managed Care: Its Origins and Development

Discussion Question 1 (30 points)

Select at least five (5) factors that have brought about the rise in health care costs and explain how you think Managed Health Care has affected each of those factors, either positively or negatively (or has had no effect). (30 points) (A 2-page response is required.)

Answer: Although our government is spending alot of money on the public health care services but still there is spike in the cost of Healthcare cost.

There are many factors which contributes in the rise in health care cost such as:

1. Lack of awareness of healthy living: Due to busy schedule people are avoiding there health and not eating healthy diet or food. This leads to increase in the bad cholesterol, obesity etc. These causes worse the situation and causes people to get ill and suffers from various diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes etc. Hence this leads to increase in the visits to hospital for treatment. They charge the price for taking care and treating us.

2. Fear of malpractices: Sometimes due to dear of law suits, physician prescribes many unnecessary test and diagnosis which leads more expenses.

3. Use of advanced technology: Now adays treatment is done with advance technology, not only treatment but diagnosis is also performed. These heavy machinery and equipments are costly so the treatment charges automatically becomes higher.

4. Insurance: Although there are many health insurance available, only people having much amount of money can afford themselves a proper treatment.

5. Lack of awareness about the Medical cost: Sometimes most of the medicine having same ingredients are being sold at a very high rates due to its brand name but it can be available at much cheaper rate.

These things directly or indirectly affect the cost rise in the healthcare system as well as in the industry.
