Solution:

Separators are used to keep anode and cathode far apart from each other in a battery. Separators are of two types, wet separators and dry separators. The dry separators are used in large scale due to its lower cost than wet separators.

When both electrodes (cathode and anode) are allowed to touch each other inside the battery, then short circuit occurs. Thus, the main function for separators are to prevent short circuit in battery.
