Carbamic acid, H2NCO(OH),is formed during the production of urea, CO(NH2)2, from carbon dioxide and ammonia. In carmabic acid, the carbon atom is attached only to the nitrogen atom and the two oxygen atoms. In urea, the carbon atom is attached only to the two nitrogen atoms and the oxygen atom.

CO2 + NH3 → H2NCO(OH)

H2NCO(OH) + NH3 → CO(NH2)2 + H2O

(a) Draw the electron dot structure and use the VSEPR model to predict the molecular geometry about the carbon atom in carbamic acid.

(b) Draw the electron dot structure and use the Valence Bond model to predict what orbitals are used by the carbon atom in the bonding of urea.

(c) Based on your structure in (b), what is the bond order of the CO bond in urea?
