Employee’s use of social media can certainly affect the company in a positive manner. In today’s digital world information is available on a real time basis and social media has emerged as one of the most powerful tools to share and exchange information, ideas, and thoughts. Employee’s use of social media will help the company as information discovery and delivery is enhanced. Employees can use social media to solve a work related problem and ask necessary questions the answers to which will help them to deal with a work related problem in a systematic and tangible manner. Lastly the company will be affected in a positive manner as use of social media by employees will lead to strengthening and building of personal relationships with coworkers.
The difference if it is done on their own time and from their own personal accounts is that the positive impact will get amplified. This is because doing so in their own time will lead to lower level of distractions for the employees and hence they will be able to focus better on the work at hand. They will be able to work in a manner so that their skills and capabilities are utilized properly towards achieving the goals and objectives of the company.
Employers should have a restrictive policy with regards to social media use by employees. First of all there should be restrictions in place with regards to use of social media during work hours. Terms and conditions should be comprehensively laid out as to when employees can and cannot use social media. Secondly there should be clear explanation of security rules and protocols as well. Lastly operational protocols should also be laid out so as to ensure that there is no PR crisis in future.
