Answer #1

1.The simulation is a teaching technique with the mocking of a real life situation. The students must be

  • Motivated enough to participate actively involve in simulation.
  • They must have thorough theoretical knowledge
  • Students may need thorough discussion with the teacher or facilitator before the simulation.

2. The purposes of simulation are:

  • Help students practice decision making and problem solving skills and develop human interactions in a controlled setting.
  • The student achieves cognitive, affective and psychomotor outcomes
  • Provides a chance to apply principles and theories to practice and assess their effectiveness.
  • The knowledge gained through simulation can be transferred easily to real patient care settings.

3. The reasons for IV therapy are

  • IV administration of fluid: When the patient needs fluid to be administered through vein, when oral or nasogastric is contraindicated, the IV line is put for the patient.
  • IV administration of medications: Some medications has to be administered IV only and in some cases patient may not be able to tolerate oral medications or oral medications are not effective enough, then the IV medication has to be given. Also when the medicine is given IV, the response as well as the effect can be faster.
  • IV administration of blood or blood products: Blood and blood products need to be administered IV only. So for this purpose, an IV access is very essential.

4. Three complications of intravenous therapy

  • When I.V. fluid or medications leak into the surrounding tissue, infiltration and extravasation occurs . This is caused by improper placement or dislodgment of the catheter. The main cause for the IV catheter to slip out is patient movement.
  • Another complication of IV therapy is Phlebitis or inflammation of a vein. This occurs due to trauma to vein during insertion, infusing of acidic or alkaline solutions or solutions that have a high osmolarity, use of an inappropriate I.V. catheter size for the vein, or prolonged use of the same I.V. site.
  • Another potential complication of IV therapy is Local or systemic infection. Unfollowing of aseptic techniques is the major cause for this.

5. Three critical steps involving IV insertion:

  • Identify the client and explain the procedure, indications, level of discomfort to the client. Provide a comfortable position for the client and keep on explaining to the client through out the procedure. Explain how to protect the cannula after insertion.
  • Assemble the necessary articles and follow strict asepsis throughout the procedure.
  • Locate the appropriate vein , stretch the skin distally and insert the IV cannula needle with bewel upward at 30 degrees. When backflow of blood is found on the hub, advance the catheter to 2mm more , remove the needle and fix the cannula.
