ANSWER

As per the given question,

( a). A scatter plot of the given data is attached. It may be observed from the scatter plot that the relationship between the weight (x) in pounds and the metabolism rate m inn kilo calories/day seems to be linear.

The point-slope form of the equation of a line passing through the points (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) is (y-y1) = s(x-x1) where s = (y2-y1)/(x2-x1).

Assuming x1 =88, x2=200, y1=m(x1)=1291 and y2= m(x2) =2071, the required linear relationship is m(x)- 1291 = [ (2071-1291)/(200-88)](x-88) or, m(x)= (780/ 112)(x-88) +1291 = (780/112)x – (68640/112)+1291 or, m(x) = 6.964x + 678.143 ( on rounding off to 3 decimal places).

(b). The derivative model is m’(x) = 6.964.

( c). m’(x), i.e. the derivative of the metabolic rate model represents the rate of change of the metabolic rate with weight.
