PERIODONTAL SURGERY
Periodontal surgery or gum surgery involves many types of treatments involved for gum diseases. These are mostly performed by a periodontist as he is specialised in this. Initial gum treatments involves scaling and filling. This can be performed by a general dental surgeon. When these two fails, i.e. when issue is beyond scaling and filing then we go for gum surgery to protect gum tissues.Initially these treatments were done only for periodontal issues, but these days it has become a part of cosmetic dentistry were people come to make them smile better.Condition like gummy teeth and teeth too long can be corrected by gum surgery.one type of gum surgery is Gingivectomy.
Gingivectomy
Gingivectomy is basically surgical removal of gum tissue, eliminate abscesses , eliminate gingival overgrowth ,provide access for gingival overgrowth.Gum tissue may be removed due to following reasons:
1) Periodontal pockets : Here some kind of wholes are created in tooth which can trap food debris. If the depth of the pocket is more than 3-4mm bacteria is allowed to grow and gum disease will recur.
2) Uneven Gumline :-In sum cases ratio of gumline is imperfect. These type of issues is also corrected using this type of surgery. This is a type pf cosmetic treatment.
3) Subgingival Tooth Decay:- At times Gingivectomy is performed to get the access to root area to perform a dental filling or so
4) Impacted Wisdom Teeth : - In some cases wisdom area get infected and inflammated when wisdom tooth are not erupted fully. Such cases also gingivectomy is performed.
Gingivectomy Procedure
1) Area to be treated is numbed by providing a local anesthesia.
2) Depth of the decays is measured using a periodontal probe.
3) Gums are marked to guide the incisions.
4) incisions given to remove the tissues are lifted up to 45 degree with the root.
After treatment surgical area is covered with a dressing. The procedure can vary between minutes to hours
Instruments used :- In most cases scalpel is used. Special instruments like angled blades, electrosurgery units, lasers or dental burs may also be used. Pain relief medicines are given for somedays to subside the pain of the procedure.
