Nurse practitioners are becoming common in health care, often seeing patients instead of physicians. Interview an experienced nurse practitioner and discuss how she establishes and maintains relationships with patients and other members of her health care organization: receptionists, technicians, nurses, and physicians. How does the nurse practitioner deal with patients who clearly expect to see a physician rather than a “nurse”? How does she deal with physicians who see her as encroaching on their turf?

Answer #1

The nurse practitioners should establish a professional relationship with the members of healthcare organizations. They should be friendly with the receptionist because they are non medical personnel and they fix the appointment .A good understanding is necessary between two professionals. Should enable to access reports from the technicians, they should be a educator and provide guidance to the nurses. With a physician a professional relationship should be maintained by forwarding the cases which really needs a physician visit for higher diagnostic procedures or test and treatment.

The best way to deal with these type of patient is trying to create a good therapeutic nurse patient relationship ,instilling the confidence and trust that they can be treated by the NP than a physician.

The physician has to be handled in a way that the NP has the knowledge and capability to take the right decision and help the sick to recover faster.A dominancy attitude can lead to self destruction as healthcare is a sector where teamwork is most essential for quality and best patient care.

For example, two New Jersey patients sued their physician over the website ads she ran for LASIK eye surgery.
