Infusion pump refers to a medical device that helps to deliver fluids, drugs dissolved in fluids in a controlled manner in order to regulate the correct delivery of medicines. It is also used to deliver nutrients in patients with malnourishment, post operative surgical patients and surgery involves in oral cavity. There are different infusion pumps used in the health care sector like: gravity infusion devices-the infusion is done on the principle of gravity to deliver the medications, patient controlled analgesic pumps- the patient has right to control the dosage of analgesics based on the intensity of their pain. Syringe pumps are used to deliver medications of high concentration like Inotropic dopamine,adrenaline, dobutamine and amiodarone. Volumetric pumps has smart features like alarm system that triggers if anything went wrong with the infusion pumps.
The common problems with infusion pumps include : alarm error, failure in battery, fire,risk of shock pump generator failure.
Battery failure is most common mechanical error. It comes under medical negligence too. To prevent battery failure it is mandatory to replace the batteries before the battery validity ends. Next pr fail to activate problem with infusion pump is software defects in which pumps won't detect a problem and initiate alarm. In other hand the infusion pumps create false alarm with out any preexisting problem.
