The functional groups in aspartame are :

1) Carboxylic acid group - (-COOH) which consists of carbonyl (-C=O) group with a hydroxyl group (-OH) attached to the same carbon atoms.

2) Amine ( -NH2) which consists of basic nitrogen with lone pair of electrons and attached to hydrogen atoms and carbon atom. It is derived from ammonia (NH3).

3) Amide (-CONH-) which consists of carbonyl group (-C=O) group attached to the amine nitrogen. It is derived from carboxylic acid and amines.

4) Ester (methyl acetate) (-COO- ) which consists of carbon atom attached to two oxygen atoms i.e. carbonyl (-C=O) group with an oxygen atom. It is also derived from carboxylic acid.

5) Phenyl (C6H5-) which is an six carbon aromatic cyclic ring where carbon atoms are bonded by alternate single and double bonds. It is derived from benzene ring where one hydrogen atom is substituted.
