Ans. Project Sponsors have an overall accountability for the project. They perform several functions to ensure efficient implementation of the project which inturn ensures higher rate of success of the project. Some of the functions which they perform are :

1) Sponsors helps in more efficient communication and observation with customers , team and other stakeholders.

2) Sponsors provide additional expertise and guidance to the project manager and the team.

3) Sponsor helps in prioritizing the initiative and also ensure that it is launched and initiated properly.

4) Sponsor also provides financial resources for the project.

5) Sponsors also timely evaluate progress and status of the project.

Yes , Sometimes executive sponsor can be a disadvantage for the project if the executive sponsor misuses it's powers and don't carry out their responsibilities properly. Increased indulgence of the executive sponsor in the project can also sometimes lead to inefficient outcomes , chaos and delay in the project.
