The health belief model (HBM) is a social psychological health behavior change model developed to explain and predict health-related behaviors, particularly in regard to the uptake of health services. A stimulus, or cue to action, must also be present in order to trigger the health-promoting behavior.

The four main components of the HBM are:
1.perception of susceptibility for the identified health threat;
2.perception of the severity of the identified health threat;
3.perception of the benefits from taking action to reduce the identified health threat; and
4.perception of barriers and/or costs of taking action to reduce the identified health threat.
