Answer #1
  • ANSWER-two constructs that have independent influences on health behavior are Perceived Threat and Expected net gain
  • Health belief model is a value-expectancy model, where the primary construct is predicted on the basis that behavior change will occur only when sufficient benefits remain after subtracting the costs experienced by performing the behavior.
  • HBM suggests that perceived threat directly influences the likelihood of engaging in the protective behavior.Perceived threat can be moderated by a host of factors (age, race, knowledge of disease);these are called modifying factors. For example,Perceived threat of flu may be higher for elderly.
  • Another motivating force is the expected net gain of the behavior, here net refers to what remains after resources to defray expenses have been allocated.
  • People are unlikely to act (adopt a health protective behavior) in absence of a clear expected net gain.
  • A positive net gain can be achieved by: increasing the perceived value of benefits that can be expected from the action, decreasing the perceived barriers to performing an action or a combination of both.
