MEANING:

The word Nurse originated from the Latin word nurtix, which means to NOURISH ''.

DEFINITION:

The Nurse is defined as a person who nourishes, fosters, protects, and who is prepared to take care of sick, injured, and aged people.With the expanding role and functions of the Nurse in todays' society however, anyone definition is too limited to define Nursing.

Nursing is defined as an art and science.It may be defined as the service to the individual which helps him/ her to obtain or maintain a healthy state of mind or body and the relief of pain and discomfort.

Clinical and Ethical decision maker As an advocate of the patient and the family, makes the clinical and ethical decisions for the ultimate benefit of the patient and the family.
Protector and Clinical advocate Protects patients' rights.Involves concern for and actions on behalf of the patient to bring about a change.
Change Agent Initiates changes or assists patients to make modifications in themselves or in the system of care.
Case Manager Makes decision, coordinates activities pf others, and allocates resources for care.
Rehabilitator Plays an important role in restoration of health of the patient.The Nurse works with patient to regain the health status as close as possible to the premorbidity state.
Comforter Helps in promoting the comfort of patient and family during the period of care.
Communicator Supports the patient through health care team and supports people in communiy
Teacher Provides information and helps the patient to learn or acquire new knowledge and technical skills.Interprets information to the patient.
Leader As a leader, coordinates the activities of members of the nursing staff in delivering nursing care, and has personnel, policy and budgetary responsibilities for a specific nursing unit or agency.
Researcher Participates in identifying significant researchable problems and scientific investigation.
