So - how good of a job do you think we are doing with Healthcare in the US today? The US has the most expensive healthcare - by far! How do we fix this?
We hear a lot lately about the problems with healthcare in the United States. While the need to improve quality and decrease costs is real, let’s not forget to celebrate what is good about the US healthcare system.
In today’s commentary, I’d like to share a bit of history to emphasize one point: our healthcare is the best the world has ever seen.
Most hospitals in the USA have the latest technology and best trained people. The threat of a lawsuit demands hospitals stay up to to par otherwise they could get sued. In a single payer system equipment is often outdated and or at least aging. The drive to stay cutting edge disappears in a single payer systems … there is no competition.
Pharmaceuticals are at the cutting edge as well. USA leads the world in healthcare technology innovation. No one is even a decent second. You can add up all the Research and Development dollars invested in all the single payer systems all of Europe and they dont come even close to 25% of what the USA spends.
United States is one of the developed country of the world. The standard of living is high as well as the healthcare is also expensive in the world due to many factors. We can say that United States do not want to compromise with the health of their citizens and give them the best health care with best and advanced technology in this field. The main reason for health care being expensive are
DRUG COST - The government in U.S does not negotiate with the drug makers regarding the price. It allows them to set their own prices if the drug is safe this mainly leads to high price of drugs which may cost expensive to the patients. Sometimes the drugs cost high but the benefit from them is not worth their value.
DEFENSIVE MEDICINE - The defensive medicine is another reason for expensive healthcare . Defensive medicine is where the doctors do unnecessary tests on the patient when there is no such need to do in order to stay protected from lawsuits against them. This leads to over testing and overtreatment.
EXPENSIVE TREATMENT - The specialist doctors charge more fees than the primary care doctors which leads to high cost of health care. The number of MRI s and mammogram are higher and the Caesarean section is also done on a higher scale which increases the cost of health care in the U.S
ADMINISTRATIVE COST - The salaries of the nurses and physicians are high despite the requirement which leads to unwanted addition of cost in your medical bills. The administrative cost like billing and insurance process are driving the health care expensive.
