Culture is defined as a complex pattern of shared meanings, beliefs, and behaviors that are learned and acquired by a group of people during the course of history. Different cultures and their health beliefs :-

1. European Americans

Health is a state of well-being, both physically and mentally.

Cause of most illnesses explained by germ theory, stress, or improper diet.

Frequently seek health- care. Utilize self-help products.

2. African Americans

Illness is caused by natural(e.g., cold air, pollution, food) and unnatural (e.g., witch- craft, voodoo) forces. Use home remedies before seeking healthcare.

Frequent use of folk medicine and self-care.

Prayer is common means of preven- tion and treatment

3. Arab Americans

Health is a gift from God.

Illness is caused by evil eye, bad luck, stress, germs, or an im- balance of hot/dry and cold/wet.

Mental illness should be able to be controlled by the patient. Commonly seek and use healthcare.

May use home/folk remedies (e.g., sweating, herbal teas) and religious rituals.

#. Cultural beliefs affects the health severely . It depends on the people's perception that how they deal with health and disease condition . For example - in Jewish culture blood transfusion is not allowed according to their culture. So, it becomes an important aspect for the healthcare workers to know the cultural beliefs before providing care and Interventions should be appropriate according to their beliefs.
