The ground profile of a construction site consists of a 3 m thick layer of sand followed by a 2 m thick layer of clay lying on impervious bedrock. The water table is at a depth of 2 m below the ground surface. The sand has a dry unit weight of 16 kN/m3 and a saturated unit weight of 18 kN/m3. The capillary rise in the sand is 0.5 m. The clay has a bulk unit weight of 19 kN/m3.

One dimensional consolidation test carried out on an undisturbed sample taken from the middle of the clay layer gave the following results.

Evaluate the maximum preconsolidation pressure of the sample and the overconsolidation ratio of the clay layer.   

If the site is uniformly overloaded with a surcharge of 200 kN/m2 calculate the final settlement of the clay layer.

Calculate the ultimate settlement of the clay layer and time is taken for 90% of the consolidation to take place. Use the coefficient of consolidation calculated in Q2.
