Interpersonal relationship is an essential component in the journey of nurse -even if it is in practice and education. It helps the nurses to create a unique perspective about the patient and also the integral part of education. The nurse educator and the student nurses have to maintain the good interpersonal relationship so that communication and the performance will be greatly influenced.
In this context , I would like to select one of the the most important nursing theoriesto associate with nursing education speciality and it is " theory of interpersonal relationships by Hildegard Peplau". It highlights the significance of a nurse and a patient , at the same time nurse educators and the student nurse forming a productive partnership.
Nurse educators can comprehensively teach their students regarding interpersonal theory so that they will become more efficient in delivering care to the patient by building a relationship with mutual respect .
The four main phases of this theory includes
1. Orientation
2. Identification
3. Exploitation
4. Resolution.
Orientation - It is the first phase where the nurse helps the patient to get oriented with the treatment process and the nurse has to be educated properly about that.
Identification - This is the phase where the patient started expressing their feelings to the nurse and their helplessness started reducing.
Exploitation- In this phase, the nurse has to be very careful because the patient may become more dependant on them. So the nurses has to be trained well to handle the patients during this phase more effectively.
Resolution - This is the final phase where both the nurse and patient work together to terminate the professional and therapeutic relationship that has developed because the patient doesn't require the nursing care anymore. The nurses should have a thorough knowledge about the boundary to maintain healthy emotional balance.
By the application of nursing theories the nurse educator gain more knowledge that are essential for helping the nursing students in ensuring the quality of service they provide. By acquiring post graduate level programs , the nurse educators can advance their knowledge about various nursing theories and it's implication in moulding novice nurses.
