Insulin is a high risk medication ,insulin pens were eventually introduced in inpatient setting because relative to the conventional practice of insulin administration by vials and syringe ,this Use increased the both provider and patient satisfaction.

Medication errors are common who dont have adequate knowledge regarding how to Use the insulin pen

Common medication errors with insulin pens :

A person may dial in correct dose ,put the needle into skin correctly ,but instead of pushing the button at the Whs of the pen to inject the insulin into skin ,dial the dose back zero. This would result in no insulin being injected.

Some people know that they need to push the button to deliver the insulin but they dont push hard enough to inject the entire dose .

Another common mistake is to fail to leave the needle in place for at least 6 seconds after pushing the button on the pen .if the needle is removed too soon the full dose of insulin is not administered

In sometimes ,patient may inject the needle in a 45 degree angle , We should inject the needle in 90 degree for injecting complete dose in to skin .

Dont leave the needle to pen after administration because the air may filled in the needle ,so less dose will be injected in next time .
