Zika outbreak was caused due to infection with zika virus. It is the member of virus family Flaviviridae. It is spread through mosquito bite by aedes mosquito. Aedes mosquito is active during day time. Zika virus was first found in 1947 in the Zika forest of Uganda. Zika virus remain confined to the equatorial belt covering areas of Africa and Asian till 1950. In 2007 it travelled to America and caused by major outbreak from 2007 to 2016.

Zika virus is mainly spread through aedes aegypti mosquito which is active during daytime. It can be transmitted through blood transfusions and sexual contact. In pregnant women it can pass the placenta and harm the fetus.

Zika virus multiplies in the mosquitoes midgut and can be transferred to human by mosquito saliva through bite. Zika virus causes mild fever. The symptoms include fever, headache joint pain, general malaise, fatigue.

Pregnant women are at the highest risk of developing zika due to low immunity. Zika virus can pass the placenta and affect the fetus. It causes serious birth defects in the fetus. It may cause microcephaly and other brain malformations. Pregnants women are advised not to travel in the area prone to zika virus. The women living in areas of outbreak of zika are advised to avoid pregnancy during the period of outbreak. Measures to prevent zika virus include prevention of mosquito bites. This can be achieved through following :

1. Use of mosquito repellents

2. Use of mosquito nets

3. Eliminating mosquito breeding grounds like stagnant water

4. Use of condoms to avoid sexual transmission of the disease

5. Keeping the surrounding clean to prevent mosquito breeding
