an nutrition focussed physical exam is a systematic head to toe examination of patient physical appearance to determine nutritional status by uncovering any signs of malnutrition ,nutritional deficiency and nutrient toxicity.

-in 2012 consensus statement ,the academy of nutrition and dietitics and american society for parenteral and enteral nutrition defined malnutrition as the presence of two or more following characteristics :

• Insufficient energy intake.
• weight loss.
• loss of muscle mass.
• loss of subcutaneous Dad.
• localized or generalized oedema.
• decreased functional status.

When would the order of performing a nutrition focussed exam be altered :

• When the dietition is not having adequate knowledge to do the nutrition physical exam.
• if resources are not available .
• if the patient is not co operated to do the physical examination.
• when ever the adequate equipments are not available such as tape ,weighing machine , torch light etc .
• when ever the fundings are not available for the dietician .
• lack of physical facility .
• if patient not willing for physical examination
• any associated dieases ,there will be a chance for confusion to diagnose the malnutrition.
• lack of laboratory and other diagnostic facilities .
