Topic: Understanding Prescriptions - A Case Study
Understanding basic pharmacology calculations can help prevent numerous injuries and deaths every year. Similarly helping a patient understand their prescriptions is equally as important when it comes to preventing medication errors.
After a stay in the hospital, Doris is sent home with two liquid medications. Dosage information for these medications is as follows:
Medication A: 2 tsp po q4h
Medication B: 2.5 mL po tid
It does not matter the type of medications in this scenario. Looking at the different prescriptions, describe the information that should be provided to the patient regarding these medications and any cautions that would be advisable given the different measurement units provided. What tips might you share with Doris to help her remember when to take the two different medications?
Educating a patient on drug prescription will prevent medication errors and helps to maintain the peak and through levels of a particular drug

The education to Doris will be to take 10ml of medication every 4th hourly .we should explain her that 1tsp is 5 ml and q4h means q:quaque is a Latin word which means every and 4h means 4th hourly so we will have to explain doris that after taking the first dose of medication A she should take tgetsecond dose after 4 hours .and po means per oral which explains that the tablet will should be consumed by mouth
Medication B:2.5ml po tid
This prescription means to take 2.5ml of medication tid means three times a day which can be further explained that she can keep a gap of 8 hours between the doses .this mrdicamedi also to be taken orally .
We can explain her that she can use a measuring cap of 10ml to measure the medications accurately .
And three times a day medication can be taken after breakfast,after lunch,after dinner
And four hourly medications can be taken after breakfast,after midmorning snack,after lunch,after mid evening snack,after dinner snack,midnight 6am,10am,2pm,6pm,10pm,2am
