Answer #1

The workers compensation program was an outcome of the progressive era when the reformers responded to both Labour and employer where there were higher rates of work related injuries, insufficient compensation to injured workers and continuing employer uncertainty. In 1917 the workman's compensation insurance and safety act was passed.
Purposes:
• To ensure that the cost of industrial injuries will be part of the cost of goods rather than a burden on society
• To guarantee prompt and limited compensation for an employee's work injuries
• To spur increased industrial safety
• To insulate the employer from tort liability for his employee's injuries
The occupational safety and health administration was established in 1971. It was to assure safe and healthy working conditions for working men and women by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance.
Purpose:
• Provide their workers a hazard free environment to work
• Provide personal protective equipment
• Provide safety training to workers
• Keep accurate records of work related injuries and illness
