You are assigned to assist a technologist with a barium enema on an inpatient. You are asked to bring the patient into the room while the technologist prepares the fluoroscopy room for the procedure. Once the patient is in the room and on the table, the technologist proceeds with instructions and an explanation of what will take place. While the technologist is tipping the patient, you read the x-ray order and you see under Clinical Comments that the exam has been ordered to "rule out a perforated bowel, which is a contraindication for the use of barium."

How should you approach this situation?

Why would you not use barium for contraindication?

How would you assess if the patient has performed their pre enema kit correctly?

What would be the post-procedural instructions for the patient we are going home.

Answer #1

Request the technicia to hold the procedure and confirm with physician that as barium enema is contraindicated for the patient with perforated bowel.now , he will be undergoing this procedure to rule out a perforated bowel .she needs to find out that he does not have perforated bowel and to confirm that he is undergoing for barium enema.then, the procedure can be continued.

If it is used in contraindicated patient ,it can create more presure on large intestine which may lead to perforation in colon and rectum.so this should be avoided if patient has any contraindication.

Ask the patient that when he has taken pre enema kit and how he used it .how many times he passed motion?
