With the patient under general anesthesia, a midline incision was made. After the spleen was identified, surrounding tissue was dissected free. The splenic artery and vein were visualized, divided, and ligated. The spleen was removed. A Penrose drain was placed, and the wound was irrigated. The incision was closed with sutures.
