The arts, lifestyle, customs, background and habits that characterize a particular society or nation is called culture.

Culture and Cardiovascular disease

A disease involving the heart or blood vessels( arteries and veins) is called Cardiovascular disease. example: Coronary heart disease, hypercholostrlemia, hypertension etc. Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading cause of death in the United States. In US 48 percentage( 121million) of population suffer with any form of cardiovascular diseases.

Research studies show that risk of disease varies with culture . Those who live in industrialised and developed countries having a high blood pressure when comparing with the blood pressure measurement of people who lives in traditional and less developed societies. It may be because of the work pressure, stress related to modernisation.

Obesity is one of the main risk factor of Cardiovascular disease. Studies show that Obesity prevalence is comparatively low in the country of Japan but higher rate of Obesity prevalence is there in United States. Increased amount of calories consumption and physical inactivity, stress contribute to obesity. Cultural practices influences our attitude towards eating and food.

Even though Genetic put a risk on certain ethnic groups to cardiovascular disease( high prevalence in African Americans), cultural and life style factors exert more influence in the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases . Smoking is one of the another major risk factor for CVD. Social, cultural and environmental factors affecting the tendency of smoking. Junk food consumption and pub culture also put a risk for CVD.

Intervention that can work over cultural level

A comprehensive strategy is required for preventing CVD and promoting Cardiovascular health. Culture of a ethnic group or a community groups highly influences the food choices of that group. Traditional diet that they followed might be healthy but when they migrate to western culture or place, their food choices may vary according to their life style, work, availability of food items. Intervention to promote Cardiovascular health and to reduce CVD is can be tailored with culture. Promotion of traditional food, Counselling and Community Based health education programmes on life style modification can be one of the good intervention to reduce the Junk food consumption.

For example; promotion of a traditional food such as beans and other legumes ( traditionally used by many cultures world wide) can be an acceptable idea by different cultural group.

Respect all culture and their cultural practices while implementing the intervention . Promote and encourage the use of traditional way of cooking and traditional foods to reduce the risk of CVD.
