Top five effective Reading Strategies

To maximize the reading comprehension students has to learn to use some of the strategies or skills in reading. The top five reading strategies are:

* Read the key parts of the book or text

Reading the key parts of a book or previewing the book will give an idea about the book or author's view point. Start reading the introduction, abstract (if any )and then conclusion. This reading skill is also known as skimming

* Scanning

The act of something being scanned is called scanning. It is done to locate some specific information in the book. For Scanning the text, one must go through the table of contents, read the chapter headings, look at the drawings and diagrams.

* Look for key information

Key words thar are important and relevant to the topic will be there in the paragraph. Underline it, if possible. By reading the key information one can analyse and evaluate what he read.

* Critical reading

Through critical reading, one can exercise judgement about the parts that he read. Questioning should be regarding the arguments of author and its evidence.

* Write down the key points

At the end of each session write down the key notes. It will help to concentrate and revise the main ideas.

The strategy to implement :

Skimming is an effective strategy to read. It will help the reader to overview the content of the text. It may arise the interest of the reader. Even dealing with the difficult text, skimming helps in a partial understanding of the text at first time, then the re- reading will be easier. Skimming will serve as an effective strategy to improve reading skills.
