Potomac University’s Lillian Case Asthma Center is developing a new program that focuses on a family-centered approach to asthma management. Expected client outcomes of the program are to reduce hospitalizations and days off from work or school. Your role as a nursing consultant to this program is to help the team develop a comprehensive, family-oriented educational program that covers important asthma topics such as pathophysiology, peak-flow meter (PFM) use, and exercise. Mauricio, a member of the team, suggests, “Let’s do our teaching with all the family members together in a group.” Liza, another team member, states, “We should separate the family members into similar age groups for the teaching—that way, we can better keep their interest.” You suggest that the team integrate Mauricio’s and Liza’s suggestions and plan a total of five teaching sessions, with four of the sessions grouping participants according to developmental stages and the final session grouping families together. Participants range from 6 to 50 years of age.

1: Describe how you will determine the different age range groupings of the participants for the first four sessions. Explain the different age ranges, cognitive and psychosocial stages, and general characteristics of each group.

2. Choose two different developmental stage groupings and give examples of teaching strategies you will use with each group for the specific teaching sessions. Explain why you chose these strategies for the individuals with asthma and their families.

3. What are some advantages to grouping participants by developmental stages? What are some disadvantages?

1. For the first session, participants age should ranges from 6- 20 years of age. Second session includes 21- 30 years of age. Third session includes 31- 40 years of age and Fourth session includes 41- 50 years of age.

Different age group have different cognitive, psycho social and exhibit different characteristics from each other. In the age group ranging from 6 -20 years age understanding capacity of the condition or situation is not purely developed. Adjustments with environmental changes is lower than compared to adults. In the age group 21-30 age people are some what aware about asthma , its occurence, and adjust towards environmental changes. In age group ranging from 31-40 years the psycho social awareness will be more than others, it is east to explain the causes , prevention and control of asthma. In the last session age group ranges from 41-50 years age, their judgement, level of understanding, maturity levels are much higher than the remaining age groups. Overall the general characteristics of all the age groups are they are humans, share common language, customs and social values.

2. FOR 6-20 YEARS AGE GROUP : Teaching strategies include parent educator teaching rapport should be developed, because 6 years and above is not the age who understands about asthma, its risk factors and diagnostic findings. For them teaching strategies include - AV AIDS presentation, power point presentation, one to one session of parents and educators interaction strategies.

FOR 21 - 30 YEARS AGE GROUP : This developmental age group is having experience about causation of disease, prevention and management of diseases. These age groups require teaching strategy such as - flash cards, counselling sessions, awareness program on asthma, presentations, role plays, films, etc. By choosing of all these methods we are crating awareness to society people about asthma and creating awareness in the family in the society.

3. ADVANTAGES TO GROUPING PARTICIPANTS :

* Covers all the age groups, starting from childhood to old age people

*Maximum number of topics related to asthma can be covered by including all the ages

*Group interactions are possible at one roof

*Health checkups can be conducted at a time in one place

*Sharing of new thoughts and idas on asthma treatment and regimen can be possible.

DISADVANTAGES :

*Cannot concentrate on each and every members who came for sessions

*Risk of missing information while interacting with people

*Cannot cover each and every single person

*Handling of information though various age groups become difficult

*Need more team power and effort.
