PHYSIOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT

The school-age years are a time of steady growth and development. Staying physically active during this developmental phase will strengthen the fundamental skills needed to lead a healthy and active life as an adult. During this stage a normal child can gain weight of up to 2.3kg per year, grow approximately 8 cm per year, demonstrate a preference for being right-handed or left-handed, sleep up to 11 hours a night, permanent teeth begin to appear and improved hand-eye coordination.

PSYCHOSOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

On this stage children begin to compare themselves with their peers to see how they measure up. They either develop a sense of pride and accomplishment in their schoolwork, sports, social activities, and family life, or they feel inferior and inadequate because they feel that they don"t measure up.

COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT

School-age children are able to concentrate for a longer period of time in set tasks, enabling them to think, understand and find reasons for simple problems. They have a greater understanding of a variety of concepts and memory also improves dramatically.

MOTOR DEVELOPMENT

School-age children most often have smooth and strong motor skills. However, thein coordination, (especially eye-hand), endurance, balance, and physical abilities vary. Fine motor skills may also vary widely. These skills can affect a child's ability to write neatly, dress appropriately, and perform certain chores, such as making beds or doing dishes.
