The hydrogen-potassium adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+ATPase) is found at the surface of the certain gastric cells in the wall of the stomach. It exchanges potassium ions (K+) from the intestinal lumen with cytoplasmic protons (H+) which will eventually form hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stomach, also known as gastric acid. Proton pump inhibitors are a group of drugs that can be used in the treatment of acid-reflux disorders and peptic ulcer disease. Rabeprazole is an example of a proton pump inhibitor. Rabeprazole inhibits the gastric H+/K+ATPase, decreasing the production of HCl in the stomach.
