Stigma
A mark of infamy or disgrace (The condition of being out of favour, loss of favour, regard, respect) is called stigma.
Different stigma that people living with HIV are facing:
HIV ( Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infected people are facing many stigma in the society, that make their more miserable to live. Some of the Stigma that faced by HIV people are following;
* Avoidance by family, peer group
* Maltreatment in work setting and in educational settings
* Mocking or laughing at the victim and the resultant psychological damage
* Denial of health services by health care institutions.
As a result of these stigma HIV infected people are vulnerable to loss of livelihoods or income, poor health care services, withdrawal of family support, no marriage or child bearing, loss of status or reputation. Finally feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness conquer the person.
Cultural influences on perception of people living with HIV:
Although there is stigma everywhere in the world towards HIV patients. Some culture it is more and some culture the stigma is only in certain area.
People from Traditional Asian culture view HIV is associated with bad behaviors such as homosexuality, sexwork, extramarital relationship and drug use. So the people from this cultures view the HIV person as a bad man or woman and they people use to avoid HIV patients.
Studies show that 60% of Europian countries are showing discrimination to HIV people, thinking that men to men sex and drug use is the common reason to get HIV.
Countries, that stand high in educational and developmental aspects have better perception regarding HIV infection and its transmission.
