Question

A major metropolitan hospital is looking for a new CEO. The initial number of applicants was over 75 but the, search committee for the CEO narrowed the list of 75 to 5 applicants. The committee is interested in an administrator who can keep the organization in the "black". The hospital has been in the black for 3 years and would like that to continue. The previous CEO was a 9,9 on the managerial grid. The committee would like to find someone with similar managerial characteristics. After interviewing each of the 5 applicants the committee members assessed them in terms of planning, decision making and directing. The summary of each applicant is described below.

Number #1 When it comes to planning, this person would let subordinates handle the planning responsibilities for their own part of the job. In decision making, this individual would follow the thinking of the board of trustees. In directing, this individual would pass assignments on to the associate administrators and let them solve any problems that arose in carrying out these assignments.

Number #2 When it comes to planning, this individual would plan for the associate administrators, set quotas where needed, assign the steps to be followed, and establish check points to measure performance. In decision making, this person would make decisions and having done so, stick with them. In directing this individual would set out plans and instructions, watch the work of subordinates closely and make changes as the necessity arose.

Number #3 In planning, this individual would jointly review the whole picture, get reactions, ideas and commitments from the subordinates who have relevant facts and then proceed to set goals, schedules, responsibilities and check points with them. In decision making, this person would discuss the decision area with those affected, give facts from her point of view and get them from subordinates, evaluate the alternatives and make a decision based on mutual understanding. Once plans had been worked through, this individual would keep herself familiar with the progress of the associate administrators and contribute as necessary by defining problems and removing roadblocks.

Number #4 In planning this individual would suggest steps and offer assistance to the associate administrators in arranging their activities. In decision making, this person would get a picture of what the subordinates wanted as the basis for decisions that affect them. In directing, this individual would discuss assignments and then keep in touch with the associate administrators in order to show an interest in how well they were getting along.

Number #5 In planning, this individual would plan work for each associate administrator after discussing targets and schedules with the person and then make individual assignments after ensuring that each knew to check back whenever further assistance was needed. In decision making this individual would meet with associate administrator to hear his/her view of the matter and then make a decision, giving those affected the reasons behind it. Once plans and assignments have been clearly explained, this individual would keep up with each associate administrator's performance, review programs with the individual and lend assistance to anyone who was having difficulty.
