Meaning of old when our parents were growing up in my country ( India) was to get retired and being dependent on their children. It meant being more mature, reliable and free from all the tensions. Being old meant to get ready to do things that they had missed before. They were taken care more and mingled more with their family memebers especially their children and grand children. It is lot different in today's scenario that those days because now getting old means lonely life. Getting old now brings lots of tensions and depression in the people. Some people take their hobbies as their source of happiness whereas some try to mingle with groups like them.
It is happening so because the children in today's wolwo are more concerned about earning money and trying to adapt a modern life for which they have to work more, interact with higher class people, showing off and to get rid of their burdens like their parents. This also leads in not letting the children mingle with their grandparents making them lonely and hurt.
The ways with which we can develop the self esteem of old age people are:
- keeping them in good surroundings
- giving them required company from same group of people
- making them do the activities of their choice
- never abusing them
- always making them feel that they are still the head of the family and giving them chance to make decisions for the family
- taking them to their favourite places once a week
- giving them a small amount of time from the busy schedule to tell about their daily encounters
- making them a part of any discussions in the family
- allowing them to be a part of their grandchildren's lives by letting them drop and pick from the schools, or evening walk etc
