How did gender roles affect how your family interacted and functioned? Were your gender roles similar to or different from the gender roles in your community? How did gender roles affect how your community interacted and functioned?
Gender roles are defined as behavior, attitude, values and standards that a particular society mentions for both male and female. Ancient times marks completely opposite roles of male and female in majority of communities where male was considered as the provider of family and the female was the maker of family.
Gender roles are influenced by media, society, cultural belief and values. While I was growing up my family had certain strict gender roles that were different for males and females. Belonging to a conservative small family it was always seen that the females were to follow some strict rules while speaking, going out, wandering or even playing as a child. It was identified that there was a clear demarcation in society regarding the roles of the male and the female and it impacted all the values we learned. But my family followed certain of these rules and majorly influenced all of my siblings to have an equal opportunities.
For example- 1. Girls in my family were to stay at home and perceive religious preaching from the elders and but male members were allowed to visit the cathedral whenever they want. 2. Females in my family were not asked for business opinion but males had a great say in this, 3. Females in the family had to focus on house work more than males. This impacted the overall family function. As per the family system theory family is a complete system and not comprise of individual parts but should be viewed as a whole, similarly, the functioning and interaction of the family are disturbed due to such divisions and rules.
