TENS : Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation test is often done to assess pathology due to cutaneous pain.

  • Indications: acute and chronic pain, muscle spasms, post traumatic pain, post operative pain, trigeminal neuralgia, sciatica, post herpetic neuralgia, etc
  • Outcomes/Evaluation: Functional assessments, Visual Analog Pain Score, General Health Components, Physical Component Score
  • Potential Complications: Syncope, Nausea, Allergic reactions. Interventions are: for syncope- keep adrenaline ready to use, for nausea: antiemetics/reassurance, allergic reactions- hypoallergenic pads.
  • Nursing interventions:  pre: educate patient about procedure, dry and clean the skin, intra: maintain adequate procedural environment, keep emergency medication ready, post: educate patient
  • Client Education: buzzing/tingling is normal, clean the patch before and after using, not to be used in pregnant women or those using pacemakers, see a doctor if you feel dizzy
