Ear drop instillation :-

#. Description - Ear drop instillation is a procedure for instillation of ear drop medication into the ear .

#. Indications :-

- ear infection

- ear pain

- inflammation

- to remove ear wax

#. Nursing interventions :-

-Assess hearing prior to administering medication

-Warm bottle of drops between hands before administration (rolling)

-Position on side with affected ear up

For adults: pull pinna of ear up and back

For children: pull pinna of ear down and out

-Avoid forcing the drops/they can perforate the ear drum.

-use cotton ball in ear

- lie on side position for 15 minutes.

#. Client education :-

- keep the ear drop at room temperature

- lie on side after putting ear drops

- check the date of expiry before administration

- hand wash before applying

- don't touch the nozzle to the ear

- put the ear drop from a certain distance

#. Potential complications :-

- allergiec reaction

- dizziness

- breathing difficulty

- redness of ear
