Description of the skill

• The staff will be able to describe the indications,outcome,education for client,potential complications, and nursing interventions for patient with nasal cannula

Indications

• nasal cannulas are used when low level oxygen concentration is required.
• respiratory distress from conditions such as bronchitis,oneumonia etc
• to deliver desired low concentration oxygen to COPD patients.
• Respiratory support after mechanical ventilation.
• Weaning therapy from BIPAP

Outcome/Evaluation

• The patient is able to maintain normal SPO₂ and breathing normally with normal respiratory rate.

client education

• Inform the client regarding the importance of keeping the nasal cannula continuously.
• ask the patient to inform if there is any discomfort in the nostrils.
• Ask the patient to inform if there is any sudden change in respiratory effort.

Potential complications.

• Hyperoxygenation
• infection in the nasal passage
• injury to the nasal passage

Nursing interventions

Pre

• Explain the procedure to the patient
• check for any contraindications such as trauma to nostrils or any recent nasal surgery
• select appropriate size of nasal cannula.
• ensure that a safe oxygen supply is present
• Check the respiratory rate and SPO2

post

• Make sure that the nasal cannula is properly placed
• ensure appropriate oxygen suppply
• monitor respiratory rate and SPO2
• monitor for any complications
