An athlete is running a 5 mile race. Describe which energy system(s) will be utilized during this event and if/how they will interact. A model answer would include duration, substrates, and limiting factors for the energy systems.

There are two types of exercise namely and aerobic(with oxygen) and anerobic(without oxygen). It is classified into three systems they are

  • Glycolysis (anerobic)(short term system ) duration lasts for 1 to 2 minutes
  • Phosphogen (anerobic) duration lasts for 10 seconds
  • Aerobic (longbterm system) durstion lasts for 2 to 3 minutes

An athlete who is a runner should follow a exercise which is aerobic in nature.The Aerobic system is the best way to get energy during an event .Nearly 99% of energy is contributed by this system .It makes use of the carbohydrates, protein and fats to release energy.It is also called as fat burner.It first makes use of the fats to produce energy and carbohydrates helps its metabolism .It is not limited to one substrate or a system to produce energy .All the three systems are made use in the production .The other limiting factors like disease condition of heart,respiratory system, musculoskeletal system ,disabilities, metabolic diseases in deficiency or difficulty in producing energy.
