Your anemic, geriatric patient presents for her routine weekly vitamin B12 shot. Her B12 levels were critically low and she has been receiving weekly B12 shots for the past five weeks. Pernicious anemia is a common indication for vitamin B12 injections. Old age patients and vegetarians can also have vitamin B12 deficiency. They are also prescribed vitamin B12 injections.

Vitamin B12 is given as an intramuscular injection. But vitamin B12 injection may cause some side effects like headache, nausea, stomach upset, pain, redness, swelling at the site of IM injection, tingling and numbness.

To avoid these side effects alternative therapy is required.

The alternative therapy to Vitamin B12 injection is oral administration of vitamin B12. Studies suggest that oral vitamin B12 at 1000ug have the same effect as vitamin B12 i.m injection. This supported by Pubmed. Pubmed article searched between January 1, 1980 to March 31, 2016 support this study. Adequate amount of diet rich in vitamin B12 also helps to maintain vitamin B12 levels in body.
