From a public health standpoint, do you believe an interracial category would be more beneficial than allowing individuals to select more than one racial category?
ANSWER:
In the past, individuals of mixed racial heritage were allowed only to select only one race, no matter how they self-identified. In my opinion it will be beneficial to allowing individuals to select more than one racial category. In numerous regards Public Health’s emerging understanding of the complexities in measuring race as well as ethnicity in relation to health is by no means complete. Thus a leadership in the collection of data for race and ethnicity by the federal government is important. It will impact both the quality of the census and several of other datasets which contribute as well as support for an effective public health programs. The new measurement of current ethnic or racial status can give accurate information concerning genetic liabilities, and then the health benefits of such new findings can be further maximized. Moreover, there is a growing recognition that current methods of assessing race/ethnicity are not sufficient precise for the requirements of researchers. Furthermore with emerging trends in demography, science, and public policy it is important that information is wider and information should be specific and appropriate
