In the spinach extraction lab by chromatography, why is β-carotene the first pigment to be eluted during the chromatography column? Explain your answer.

Answer : Beta - carotene eluted out first during the chromatography column , this is because Beta - carotene is a non polar compound . And the solvent choose is hexane which is also non polar solvent . So, non polar compound dissolve in non polar solvent and eluted out first .

After that we increase the polarity of solvent by adding ethanol or ethyl acetate in hexane to elute other components also .
