Scenario: Ms. Delle Donne is a 53 year old woman who works in the banking profession. Her work always requires her to have a yearly physical if she wants to keep her insurance discount. Her numbers have not been the greatest in the past but this time her numbers for BP and cholesterol are extremely high. She admits that she doesn't live the greatest lifestyle (barely works out, works long hours, stressful meetings, and has a poor diet) but doesn't see the issue with it. Her friend went to the physician for Similar issues and said that her medication keeps it in check and she is fine. Ms. Delle Donne doesn't understand why she needs to make a change when she could do the same. Your job is to explain to Ms. Delle Donne why medical interventions, though helpful, should not be a long term solution.

My response would be

" Ms.Delle your job as a banking professional requires you to physically and mentally fit. Physical and mental health are interdependent and are exclusive concepts. If you are physically fit, it will influence you mentally.

Your blood reports are not normal. High blood pressure and high cholesterol can result in a host of medical problems in the future. To list a few - myocardial infarction, heart failure, obstructive sleep apnea, cerebrovascular accident (stroke). Though they might not occur in the immediate future. But the stage has been set. .

If your blood pressure, blood reports, and your lifestyle are not taken seriously now, a time will develop these conditions. This would mean frequent visits to the hospital. This could lead to absenteeism and loss of pay. Apart from that, it will be difficult for a workaholic person like you to adjust to being a patient.

Your abnormal blood reports are closely related to your lifestyle. Lack of exercise, stress, improper diet and long working hours ( lack of sleep) have contributed towards it.

However, all is not lost. If we start now to rectify the problems we can prevent a medical crisis in the future. There are two ways of dealing with this problem. Pharmacological approach and non-pharmacological approach. I am sure you are aware of the pharmacological approach, thanks to your friend. But you must understand that the pharmacological approach is not the first line of action. Pharmacological measure are easy to adopt but they have their side effects. If you are started on a medicine, after a few months you will start experiencing these side-effects. Some of them might interfere with your daily routine and can be a cause of distraction from work (Example: muscle pain due to statins drugs)

Lifestyle modification will help you address the root of the problem. A proper diet, 60 mins of daily exercise and adequate sleep are simple to measure to lead a healthy and productive life. At first, it might seem impossible to adopt them into your way of life, but once they become a part of your life you will see the benefit. This is the perfect time for you to apply these lifestyle modications. Please do understand once you reach a stage where you have developed a disease like ischemia heart disease or a cerebrovascular accident, these simple lifestyle modifcations may be diffcult to adopt. Therefore don't loose this opportunity.
