[Be(OH2)4]2+

Here the Be atom is in +2 state and its electronic configuration of Be2+ is 1s2, the available orbitals of Be2+ for coordination with water are 2s and three 2p orbitals. Hence, four water molecules come and coordinate with Be2+ and hence the hydrate has the formula is [Be(OH2)4]2+

[Mg(OH2)6]2+

Here the Mg atom is in +2 state and its electronic configuration of Mg2+ is 1s22s22p6. The available orbitals of Mg2+ for coordination with water are 3s, three 3p and five 3d orbitals. Hence, six water molecules come and coordinate with Mg2+ ion and hence the formula of the hydrate is [Mg(OH2)6]2+. It cannot accomodate more than six water molecules due to steric repulsion.
