What is the document M100 Performance Standards for Antimicrobial Susceptiblity Testing?
All the clinical laboratories must be monitored and accredited by one or more national organizations. To ensure the quality of procedures and results, the clinical laboratories must meet the particular performance standards. The clinical Lab Improvement Act of 1998 (CLIA 18) mandates the regulation of facilities of clinical laboratories performing the patient testing. The standards are set by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI).
M100 Performance Standards for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing is an updated manual annually published by CLSI. The Subcommittee on (antimicrobial susceptibility testing) AST provides updated tables for the CLSI antimicrobial susceptibility testing standards useful information to laboratories, enabling them to advise clinicians in the selection of appropriate antimicrobial therapy. M100 includes annually CLSI approved Informational updated tables for M02-A11, M07-A9, and M11-A8.

Where do you stand on the standards and the testing issue? Can you separate standards from testing? How might you determine if standards are being met--without using a standardized test? Some educators assert that test development should precede standards development. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
