Seborrheic dermatitis

Genetics factors are related to this disease but there is no racial predisposition.

Causes:

  • A yeast (fungus) called malassezia that is in the oil secretion on the skin
  • Autoimmune
  • Neurologic and psychiatric conditions, such as Parkinson's disease and depression
  • A weakened immune system, such as seen in organ transplant recipients and people with HIV/AIDS, alcoholic pancreatitis and some cancers
  • Recovery from stressful medical conditions, such as a heart attack
  • Some medications

Management include antifungal preparations (selenium sulfide, pyrithione zinc, azole agents, sodium sulfacetamide and topical terbinafine) that decrease colonization by lipophilic yeast and anti-inflammatory agents (topical steroids).

assessment : Inflammation, Dry, flaky skin, Erosions, excoriations, fissures, Pruritus, pain, blisters

1. Nursing diagnosis: Impaired skin integrity related to contact with allergen or irritants

interventions:

  • Assess skin, noting color, moisture, texture, temperature; note erythema, edema, tenderness.
  • Assess skin for lesions. Note presence of excoriations, erosions, fissures, or thickening.
  • Identify aggravating factors.
  • Identify signs of itching and scratching.
  • Encourage the patient to adopt skin care routines to decrease skin irritation:Bathe or shower using lukewarm water and mild soap or nonsoap cleansers, Avoid rubbing or brisk drying and Apply topical lubricants immediately after bathing
  • Apply topical steroid creams or ointments.

interventions:

  • Assess skin for severity of skin integrity compromise
  • Assess for signs of infection
  • .Apply topical antibiotics.
  • Administer oral antibiotics.
  • Encourage the patient to use appropriate hygiene methods.

short term goal: patient will be free of secondary infection.

long term goal: Patient will have optimal skin integrity
