1). POTENTIAL ADVERSE EFFECTS OF CORTICOSTEROIDS

☆Bone loss: One of the potential side effects of corticosteroids is osteoporosis. Prolonged intake of this drug can affect the absorption of calcium and resulted in low bone mass density. Lose bone or thinning of bone leads to broken bone.

•Health teaching :

*Increase the dietary intake of calcium and vitamin D

*Quit smoking

*Avoid weight bearing exercise to prevent the risk of fractures.

☆Weight gain : Steroids affects the body metabolism. This drug increase the appetite and tempt to eat more.It alter the fat metabolism and eventually fat accumulated in the face, back of the neck and the abdomen. Initial weight gain is due the water retention in the body.

• Health teaching:

*Monitor the calorie intake

* Do regular exercise

*Reduce the salt consumption

☆Changes in blood sugar: Steroids affects the glucose metabolism and increase the blood glucose levels. It is common in patients who are taking steroids. Some people may develop steroid induced diabetes.

•Health teaching:

*Monitor the blood glucose levels

*Take medication as prescribed by the doctor

*Avoid sweets and bakery foods.

☆Risk for infection: People who are taking steroids are susceptible to infection. Steroids decrease the response of immune system and alleviate the inflammation. There by minor infections become more severe.

•Health teaching:

*Perform hand washing

*Avoid contact with sick people

*Avoid crowds.

2)* Keep the IV cannula stable to prevent the movement,it might cause skin tears

*Skin of elderly is thin. So secure the IV line with hypoallergenic tape and cover it with IV transparent dressing

*Stabilize the vein when inserting the IV line ,as the vein has a tendency to rolling upon during the insertion in older people.

3). * Patient should not use metronidazole if they have taken disulfiram in past 2 weeks

*Avoid consumption of alcohol for at least 3 days prior to the initiation of the therapy

*Avoid foods and drugs that contain propylene glycol while taking metronidazole and for 3 days after stopping it
