Post laryngectomy Nursing Interventions

1. Observe for obstruction of airway by mucus, plugs, edema or blood.

a) Keep the head elevated

b) Suction the laryngectomy tube as needed

c) Maintain good hydration status and use humidifier to keep the secretions loose.

2. Observe for signs of hemorrhage

a) signs and symptoms of hemorrhage must be taken care such as tachycardia, hypotension, cold skin, frequent swallowing, blood on dressing.

3. Establish methods of communication

a) Assist to start with the effective communication method that had been taught in the pre-operative period which will enable the efficient nurse patient relationship and even proper family support.

b) Nurse can effectively teach the skills and care to be taken at home, and encourage for speech therapy.
