Compare and contrast Dirofilaria immitis and Acanthocheilonema reconditum. Specifically, explain the morphological differences between the two microfilarial forms.

Dirofilaria immitis

it is found globally.it is mostly found where mosquitoes exist for sufficient periods to incubate infective larvae.

  • usually many in blood,stationary,straight body and tail,tapered head,307-322um.
  • tail maybe straight or hooked.
  • They are long slender ,white worms.
  • males-5-7 inches long with a corkscrew tail
  • females 12-15inches long and produce microfilaria.
  • Microfilaria of D irofilaria immitis are usually greater in number and move,but not progressively.
  • Best diagnosed with Ag test.

Acanthocheilonema reconditum

  • usually few in blood,progressive motion,curved body,blunt head ,curved or button -hook tail ,250-288um.
  • it is not pathogenic.
  • it is shorter (246-293 microns)
  • do not have a tapered anterior end.
  • has a clear cephalic space.
  • microfilaria of Acanthocheilonema reconditum is lesser in number
