Communication is am essential component to initiate a mutual environment between patient and the nurses. Lack of communication will hinders quality of care.
Three communication techniques for dealing with difficult patients are :
- Difficult patients are the one who are violent, anxious or depressed. To maintain proper communication the nurse must gain personal control by being less reactive and reducing triggers .The nurse must speak slowly ,quietly and in a lower tone. Proper body gesture / language to be maintained that should be non defensive.
- Start the conversation with smile. Introducing ourself helps patient to develop trust. Don't argue with the client.
- Effective listening and empathetic paraphrasing of patient statement or feelings . "i understand you are anxious" this is a method to acknowledge patients feelings.
What makes these communication skills difficult (barriers to successfully effectively delivering on these skills)?
